We See You.png

Dear Albert McMahon Community,

This year a number of teachers have joined together to help make a difference for families living in isolation in remote First Nations communities.  We have teamed with the Ballantyne Project and the #weseeyou campaign.

We are heading into the time of year when compassion and joy are expressed through acts of giving and sharing with each other. This year we are asking if you would join us in letting the people living in remote Indigenous communities know that we see the unique challenges they experience.  AME has set a target goal of filling 20 large flat rate Canada Post boxes with activity supplies, arts & crafts kits, board games, puzzles, paint, markers, crayons, pencil crayons, cards games, play doh/clay, Lego, colouring books, word/sudoko books, beading supplies, knitting/crochet supplies, etc.  All donations can be geared towards, children, youth, and adults.   We are so grateful to be have been paired with the Heiltsuk Nation, Bella Bella BC.  Attached you will find photos and information about our partner community.

Donations will be collected from November 15-December 15.  Please send any donations to school with your child, drop off at the office or contact Mrs. Alves if you need assistance.

Many of these communities are experiencing even more isolation than usual again this year because of the on-going pandemic. Some communities are only accessible by plane and some are located hours away from the nearest town, with no way to get these types of supplies in their home community. For families living in these communities, one of the only things to do is visit each other. This leaves them at home, many times with no internet, and very little to do to pass the time. Your participation will not only let them know that we are thinking of them, but it will give community members creative ways to spend their time.  We already know how much these boxes filled with activity supplies can mean to families because last year people from across Canada worked together to ship over 500 boxes to 10 remote Indigenous communities.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please send your inquiries to Mrs. Alves at tamara.alves@mpsd.ca.

Thank you,
Mrs. Alves on behalf of Albert McMahon Elementary
